Act IV The Vineyardist
This Act concerns the humans, without whom wine as we know it would not exist. Wine is the child of the marriage of humans and the grapevine. The human, whether man or woman, winemaker or vineyard worker, husbands the process, while the grapevine mothers the fruit. If the parenting is done with love, care, and skill, the wine may be exemplary, like the Raymond Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
The vineyard and the farm is a human concept. It cannot exist without a human to design and care for it. Yet its plants and animals operate by Nature’s laws, not human desires. The successful vineyard manager is humble before Nature’s laws and tries to farm according to them. He or she cherishes each life in the vineyard because this is what Nature does. Thus the true job of the vineyardist is to embody Nature’s beneficence by following her laws.
